Elisa’s Story

I was doing Respite Care, working in the homes of people with disabilities. While I was assisting a client, their dog came out and attacked me and I was bitten three times. I ran out of the house shaking. I went to the hospital and the doctor said I may have rabies and that I might not make it. I eventually found out I didn’t, but this incident really affected my self-esteem - i have three kids and I was fearing for the worst. I was depressed.

My anxiety has been terrible. I’ve been on leave from my full-time job of 13 years.

I’m grateful that my kids are happy and healthy, grateful that I have a home, and grateful that I’m alive. Since our situation has changed, I’ve become more humble and more appreciative for the simple things in life.

I want to get back to how it was; i love working with individuals, but what happened really took a toll on me. I’m enjoying being with my family. When my children were younger, I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with them because I was working. I’m a mentor at the food bank and I’m trying to help other people who are struggling.

I’m proud to be giving back in any way that I can.

Inspiration for my holiday card

Christmas is about family time. It’s the anticipation for Santa Claus. Decorating the house is important - even though the electricity bill goes up, we always have our tree lights on. My kids got really really excited the first time they saw Santa Claus at the parade and I did too.

I loved watching the Toronto Santa Claus parade with my mother and I’m happy to continue the tradition with my kids.
