Our 2020 Holiday Cards

A set of holiday cards that represents 2020's unique holiday season from five perspectives.

Our eighth Community Box was co-created by five of our past Creators: Ame, Hawke, Marlene, Martha, and Paul.

This holiday season will be different.

2020 has been a really challenging year.

The pandemic has forced us to be more distant from one another than ever before. Many of us will be spending this holiday season away from friends and family we would normally see. And some of us will be spending this holiday season cherishing the memory of a loved one who has passed away.

This Christmas, we all want to feel a little hopeful. Hopeful that we can finally turn the page. And hopeful that brighter days are coming soon.

It’s been a year of reckoning filled with a lot of loss and I think we all need a little hope. You just have a feeling that next year has to be better and we’re all hopeful for it.

This Christmas

We partnered with five of our past Creators for this year’s holiday cards.

Given how difficult this year has been for all of us, it was important that we checked in with our past Creators and learn how their year has unfolded. From those conversations, we captured their genuine emotions on what this upcoming holiday season will mean to them.

Ame is pictured holding a card that represents a typical holiday season he would’ve spent back home.

Every year, we celebrate the Winter Equinox. Hunters and mothers stay home, and the kids learn from their elders. It’s a month-long Inuit celebration called Quviasukvik, which translates to Happy Times. It brings everybody’s spirits together.

Every Holiday Card Gives Another

Recognizing that some of our community members will be experiencing the holiday season alone or with very limited family, we partnered with J.O.E. to deliver holiday cards to those who could use a pick-me-up. Every holiday card you purchase will help us deliver three holiday postcards to our community’s long-term care homes and social support centres!

J.O.E. (Jobs. Opportunities. Enterprise) is a Guelph charity focused on community-based opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities.

Our Five Holiday Cards

Every card is high-quality, designed locally, and gives back to our community.

Peace & Love Card

Designed by Marlene, Creator of the Self-Care Community Box.

“Knowing I’ll be with my family and my grand kids during this holiday season gives me a feeling of peace and tranquility. Just knowing how your family is and knowing that they’re doing okay.”

“I want my grand kids to know that they are loved and that I’m glad to see them. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Hopeful Holiday Card

Designed by Paul, Creator of the Self-Care Community Box.

“What makes this Christmas different than any other is the feeling of incompleteness and loss. I was a kid in 1968 when all the good people were getting killed like Bob Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. I remember all that and this year feels like it’s the same kind of year.”

“It’s a year of reckoning filled with a lot of loss and I think we all need a little hope. You just have a feeling that next year has to be better and we’re all hopeful for that.”

Happiest Holiday Card

Designed by Martha, Creator of the Self-Care Community Box.

"This card design means everything to me. Family is everything to me. I am a grandmother and passing on little traditions to my grand kids is important to me."

"Sparkles in the park is something that we all do together as a family, we have been doing it now for over 10 years and its something special for us. We enjoy the lights and each others company and then hot cocoa at home afterwards."

Happy Times Card

Designed by Ame, Creator of the Self-Care Community Box.

“We celebrate the Winter Equinox. It’s a huge family gathering where the hunters stay home, the mothers stay home, and the kids learn from their elders. It’s an Inuit celebration that lasts three weeks and its called Quviasukvik, which means happy times.”

“It’s about being happy for living, and bringing the whole community together to have fun and play games. There are big feasts almost every night and you appreciate what you’ve all gone through this year. It brings everybody’s spirits together.”

Grinch Christmas Card

Designed by Hawke, Creator of the Homelessness Box.

“After a cold and hard life, I might have found something. Someone that is doing for me what Cindy Lou Who did for the Grinch, making my heart grow.”

“Instead of ice, my heart feels like it’s filled with fire and its given me a desire to fight harder and to reach higher.”

Delivering 4,000 Postcards

For every holiday card you purchase, three holiday postcards will be delivered through J.O.E. to long-term care homes and to community members who access food banks.

Help us get to our goal of funding 4,000 postcards this holiday season!

Group sending holiday cards to care homes and social service organizations.

By Zayn Jinah, CTV News Kitchener, November 26, 2020.

“They're going to deliver holiday postcards to long-term care homes and social services organizations to share messages of hope with people who are isolated.”

“J.O.E. Guelph was behind the design and they've delivered more than 4,000 cards to homes and services around Guelph.”

“The Community Company creates its own cards each year and decide to partner with J.O.E.”

"In the midst of this kind of world that we're living in, giving a fight of hope is one of the nicest things you can do," card creator Paul Mahony said.
